600 Romanian brandy makers protest against taxes Sep 10, 2008
Gheorghe Ciocan, president of the Union of Plum Brandy Producers which organized the demonstrations in the cities of Baia Mare and Satu Mare, said the government should pass legislation to reduce taxes on thousands of small brandy producers. Producers of palinca a highly distilled fruit brandy that is very popular in Romania said the government mistakenly placed their brew in the same category as liquor of grain origin, which is more heavily taxed. A large number of volunteers around Romania and surrounding countries were drawn to the NGO after a at Romania's Baia Mare gold mine polluted the Tisza and Danube Rivers. Gabriel maintains that the project will be the first permitted under the European Union's new, more stringent, environmental laws, and ultimately help to remediate past damage from 2000 years of uncontrolled mining, leaving the region's rivers and soil actually cleaner than before. The system is designed so that even major storms will not release dangerous chemicals into the environment a huge difference from the risky, antiquated system that caused the Baia Mare overflow. The radical NGOs simply hate mining, dont live in the village, have no compassion for these families, and are under no legal obligation to be honest, transparent or accountable for the consequences of their actions.
